Q. What is Quit for Life?
A. Quit for Life is a tobacco-cessation coaching program - the only such program endorsed by the American Cancer Society. It combines phone-based cognitive behavioral coaching, Web-based learning and support tools, and medication support to help you in your quest to quit tobacco.
Q. How does it work?
A. The Quit for Life Program treats every tobacco user as a unique individual and tailors a quitting plan that is based on the participant's lifestyle, preferences and tobacco use history.
On the initial call, a Quit Coach® assesses the participant's tobacco use history and individual needs in order to help the participant identify destructive thought patterns and situational triggers that cause the desire to smoke. The Quit Coach then helps the participant develop a personalized plan to prepare for his or her quit date. The initial call also includes decision support for medications. If appropriate, nicotine replacement therapy can be delivered directly to the participant's home. Follow-up phone calls with a Quit Coach and interaction with Web Coach provide participants with the knowledge, behavioral strategies and cognitive skills necessary to successfully quit tobacco for life.
Q. What do I receive as part of the Quit for Life program?
- Up to five outbound coaching calls and unlimited toll-free access to a Quit Coach for the duration of the program.
- Unlimited access to Web Coach® — an interactive, fully featured online community that offers e-learning tools, social support and information about quitting.
- Decision support for the type, dose and duration of medication and direct mail order fulfillment, if appropriate.
- Printed, stage-appropriate Quit Guide.
- Tailored, motivational e-mails sent throughout the quitting process.
Q. On average, what are the success rates of Quit for Life participants?
A. Quit for Life administrators currently report an average quit rate for participants of 45 percent compared to 4 to7 percent for those who attempt to quit on their own. Since 2004, more than 800,000 people have enrolled in the Quit for Life program. Client and participant satisfaction with the program is consistently above 90 percent. In fact, 97 percent of Quit for Life program participants say they would recommend the program to other tobacco users.
Q. How are success rates calculated?
A. Detailed management reports are provided by Quit for Life through state-of-the art online reporting tools that provide greater transparency by sharing metrics that demonstrate trends and overall program status. Quit rates are assessed at six months by a follow-up call, when participants report the day they last used tobacco products. Participants who have not used tobacco in the last 30 days are considered to have quit tobacco. This organization's quit rates, customer satisfaction, participation rates, and service levels continue to surpass industry standards.
Q. How is this different from our company's Well...Stop! smoking-cessation program?
A. Our "Well...Stop!" program is designed to allow employees, retirees and spouses to choose the cessation program or technique - patches, gum, group support programs, hypnosis — that will work best for them. The company reimburses the cost of the program up to a maximum benefit of $300.
Quit for Life is a coaching program that combines phone-based cognitive behavioral coaching, Web-based learning and support tools, and nicotine replacement and/or prescription medication support to help you in your quest to quit tobacco. Q. Am I allowed to use both the Well...Stop! and Quit for Life programs?
A. Yes, you may use both programs.
Q. Is the cost of Quit for Life subsidized in any way?
