When It's Hazy Outside
Trying to stick to your exercise regimen, but discouraged by the heat and humidity? Here are some cool ways to stay in shape.
Mall Walking
Temperature-controlled malls are great places to walk and get away from the heat — especially if you use the stairs frequently. Log five miles (about 90 minutes of walking at a moderately brisk pace) and you'll burn 350 calories.
Swimming
It's a strenuous aerobic exercise, but unlike running or many sports, it doesn't put wear and tear on your bones and joints. And indoors or out, you stay cool.
Skating
Although it doesn't burn lots of calories, indoor roller-skating keeps you moving. Given that nearly three out of four people are sedentary or mostly sedentary, that's a step — or roll — in the right direction. And you don't have to break a sweat.
A/C Stretching
At work or home, in an air-conditioned environment, take 10 minutes to stretch your limbs and spine twice a day. Reach for the ceiling, reach for your toes, and lean against a wall and lunge to stretch your hamstrings. You'll help build flexibility, which in turn makes any exercise — and your body's own cooling system — more efficient.
