Summer Energy Savings Tips

We want to help you control your energy costs. Instead of reaching for the thermostat when it is hot and humid outside, take a conservative approach to staying cool and keeping costs down. The following summer energy savings tips will help you save money and energy.

  • Shade windows and glass as much as possible from the outside to avoid the heat of the sun. You can use trees, shrubs, or awnings at your windows. Indoors you can close drapes, blinds or shades to help keep the house cool.

  • girl diving into waterInspect and maintain all cooling systems at the start of each cooling season. Periodic maintenance such as cleaning and replacement of filters can save up to ten percent of your cooling costs.

  • Clean your air filters, fresh air intakes, supply vents, and returns grills. Dust and dirt cause your air conditioning unit to work harder and use more energy.

  • Turn off lights that you don't need. This saves energy and cuts down on added heat during the summer.

  • Replace incandescent bulbs with fluorescent bulbs in areas where you burn lights longer. You will use 1/4 to 1/3 of the energy when using fluorescent bulbs, and fluorescent bulbs generate less heat than regular incandescent bulbs meaning your home will stay cooler.

  • Use ceiling fans or small fans to help circulate the air in the summer. Moving air makes you feel cooler, so you can set the thermostat at a higher temperature and still feel comfortable.

  • Wash full loads of clothes in cold or warm water and always rinse in cold water. Line dry when possible.

  • Use the microwave or grill out for dinner so you don't build up heat in the kitchen.

  • Wash full loads in your dishwasher. You can save energy by putting dishes in the dishwasher throughout the day and turn it on only once in the evening when it is cooler.
