KU/ODP Celebrate Earth Day with Tree Seedling Giveaway in Western Kentucky, Virginia

LEXINGTON, Ky. — KU will join other local Earth Day activities around the state by giving away about 12,000 Redbud tree seedlings on April 22th, in four western Kentucky towns and two towns in Virginia.

The KU seedling giveaway points will be in the Muhlenberg County office in Greenville as well as the business offices in Earlington, Morganfield and Eddyville. The ODP giveaway points will be at the Norton and Pennington Gap business offices.

Customers may pick up two seedlings, free of charge, beginning at 8 a.m., getting them as long as supplies last.

The giveaway program supports KU and ODP's advice on planting trees… Be Tree Smart From the Start. Planting the right tree in the right place is important because the right location will help keep limbs away from electric lines as the tree matures and will reduce the possibility of outages.

Falling tree limbs on lines is one of the major causes of power outages. Planting the seedling in the proper location can also provide shade for houses, which over long term, will help reduce energy costs.

KU has offered free tree seedlings to customers in the spring of most years since 1991, and has given away more than 750,000 seedlings during that time.
