Timberland Company Becomes KU Green Business
05.21.2009

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — E.ON U.S. is proud to announce that the Timberland Company, the New Hampshire based manufacturer of outdoor apparel, has become an official "KU Green Business," offsetting 100 percent of the carbon emissions produced by the electricity used by their distribution center in Danville, Ky.

Timberland is already a corporate leader in several environmental initiatives and the Green Energy program is just one of the many resources that Timberland is using to reduce its carbon footprint. Since 2004, Timberland has implemented energy-efficiency improvements at 40 percent of their largest facilities and invested in solar energy to generate 60 percent of the energy needed to run their distribution center in California.

Kentucky Utilities Company's Green Energy program provides for the growth renewable energy that serves the Kentucky electric grid, including the Mother Ann Lee Hydroelectric Plant, located on the Kentucky River near Harrodsburg, Ky. KU residential and small business customers can participate for as little as $5 a month for each 300 kWh "block" of Green Energy.

The Timberland warehouse in Danville is the first Green Business for KU and the third in Kentucky to join the program as a business, product or event.

Large commercial and industrial customers, such as Timberland, can purchase Green Energy in larger blocks of 1,000 kWh, for $13 per month. For every kilowatt hour of electricity used by Timberland's Danville plant, they will match 100 percent with Green Energy purchases.

The environmental benefit of these purchases will be the "offset" of approximately 1,894 tons of CO2 emissions per year. Timberland's Danville plant is the first Green Business for KU to join the program at the 100 percent level.

"As the first Kentucky Utilities business to completely offset carbon emissions produced by electricity use, the Timberland Company is taking action to help the environment and promote the expansion of the generation capacity of Kentucky regional renewable power" said John P. Malloy, vice president of Energy Delivery, Retail Business, for E.ON U.S.

"We're proud to now be apart of their commendable portfolio of programs to reduce their carbon footprint and they are an excellent fit for the Green Energy program than this company," added Malloy.

An average residential customer who uses 900 kilowatt hours of electricity each month can fully offset the carbon impact of that usage for only $15 per month. All green energy purchases are voluntary and in addition to the regular bill amount.

Interested customers can enroll in the Green Energy program and calculate the environmental benefit of their purchase in terms of carbon emissions reduced each month by visiting www.lge-ku.com/green.
