LG&E, KU Again Ask Customers to Voluntarily Reduce Their Energy Consumption
08.24.2007

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In the face of continued triple-digit temperatures across the Midwest, Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities are again asking customers to actively reduce their energy consumption today.

"LG&E and KU's call for voluntary conservation yesterday worked well," said Chip Keeling, Vice President of Corporate Communications for E.ON U.S. "We sincerely appreciate our customers' prompt cooperation to reduce energy demand during yesterday's extreme heat and ask that they continue to do so today."

Yesterday's voluntary conservation efforts resulted in the utilities' not hitting an all-time peak for power usage and reduced strain on the company's electrical system. The utilities' combined power usage yesterday reached 6,916 megawatts — short of the utilities' all-time peak of 7,132 megawatts on Aug. 9.

"As the heat wave continues and strains the region's electric system, we are asking customers for a second day to take steps to reduce their energy consumption until the evening hours," added Keeling. "LG&E and KU employees are not only working hard to continue to provide the same safe and reliable service customers to have come to expect, but they are also leading by example. Company facilities across Kentucky have again turned down the lights and have set the thermostat higher."

The utilities recommend that customers continue to take the following steps to reduce their energy consumption:

  • Turn off air conditioners for 30-minute periods throughout the day.
  • Turn off all unnecessary lights. Use fluorescent lighting, which is cooler and uses less energy than incandescent bulbs.
  • Close blinds and curtains to keep out sunlight and heat.
  • Turn off all unnecessary appliances. Run your dishwashers, dryers and washing machines during the evening hours (after 7 p.m.) when energy consumption is lower.

LG&E and KU will not ask customers to voluntary conserve energy over the weekend due to typically lower energy demand and expected cooler temperatures.
