LG&E, Chevron Phillips to Host Regional Odorant Spill Exercise
(LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sept. 19, 2005) Louisville Gas and Electric Company (LG&E), in partnership with Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, will host a Regional Odorant Spill Exercise (R.O.S.E.) this Wednesday. This exercise will provide a forum for emergency responders and technical experts to participate in and observe a hands-on drill related to handling mercaptan, the chemical used to odorize natural gas. While mercaptan creates no actual health hazards, the smell is so intense that a very small amount exposed to the public or on an individual can create havoc for public and medical response officials, who respond to it as a natural gas leak. Proper management of mercaptan spills or exposure reduces potential emergency situations.
