Local Non-profits to Benefit from LG&E Energy's Day of Caring

(LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Aug. 16, 2005) Nearly 300 LG&E Energy employees and their families brightened the lives of their Kentucky neighbors during the company's inaugural "Day of Caring" on Aug. 13. LG&E Energy's "community service campaigners" tackled numerous community-service projects benefiting four area non-profits — The Center for Women and Families, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts of America, and Salato Wildlife Education Center.

At LG&E Energy's Broadway Office Complex, dozens of volunteers assembled toiletry gift bags and delivered them to The Center for Women and Families. Eight miles southeast at The Salvation Army's Warehouse on Preston Highway, more than 50 volunteers folded thousands of plastic bags for the Angel Tree program and sorted donated clothing.

Thirty-minutes south of Louisville at Camp Crooked Creek, over 120 volunteers helped the Boy Scouts of America spruce up their facility by painting trim and windows, gates and propane tanks, cutting back growth on ten miles of trail, disassembling 350 tents, and performing carpentry work.

"The teamwork and spirit demonstrated by all volunteers was simply incredible," said Tom Corbett, head ranger at Camp Crooked Creek. "We have 1,100 acres and only two full-time employees and it would have taken years to accomplish what volunteers did in a matter of hours. We appreciate all the hard work of the volunteers who worked long hours in the hot sun."

Outside of Louisville, more than 100 volunteers worked at the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort, where they built wood frames for garbage cans on trails, repainted boardwalks, and updated the landscape around several exhibits. In addition, LG&E Energy volunteers completed their on-going community service project — construction of a wildlife viewing tower.

"Community involvement has always been fundamental to LG&E Energy," said Chip Keeling, vice president of communications for LG&E Energy. "Bringing together nearly 300 employees and their families for our Day of Caring was just another way to reach out to the communities where we live and work in to touch lives in a very special way."
