KU/LG&E and LG&E Energy Set All-Time June System Peaks

(LOUISVILLE, Ky. - July 1, 2005) Continued growth and higher than normal temperatures, resulted in the state's largest utilities supplying a record amount of power during June. Louisville Gas and Electric Company (LG&E) and Kentucky Utilities Company (KU) set four June records for electricity consumption in a 60-minute time period — the highest and most recent occurring yesterday.

LG&E experienced an all-time June peak hourly demand of 2,601 megawatts. KU, likewise, experienced its all-time June high of 3,847 megawatts. The two systems combined set a new June record of 6,448 megawatts — the second-highest all-time hourly peak and a 12.4 percent increase since 2003. The all-time combined system peak of 6,513 was set on Aug. 5, 2002. The new June hourly peaks occurred at different times in the day.

"Anytime you have temperatures this high, for this long, it is going to cause a strain on our system. In addition, we're seeing a steady load increase each year so, experiencing peaks in our system is something we plan for, but it is still significant when it occurs," said Paul W. Thompson, LG&E Energy's Senior Vice President of Energy Services. "It is a true testament to both our infrastructure systems and our employees anytime we meet the demands that we experienced recently. Our employees take pride in providing safe and reliable power to the communities we serve."
