LG&E and KU Partner With Sister Cities of Louisville, Inc.; Send Two Delegates to the Gutenberg Marathon in Mainz, Germany
(LOUISVILLE, Ky. - May 27, 2005) - With the help of Sister Cities of Louisville Inc., and Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities companies, local runner, Terri Weber, and inline skater, Tom Dunbar, represented Louisville in the sixth annual Gutenberg Marathon in Mainz, Germany, on May 8, 2005.
Terri Weber, Membership Development Manager of Greater Louisville Inc., the Metro Chamber of Commerce, ran the half marathon, and Tom Dunbar, President of Management Alternatives, skated the two-thirds marathon on a course that took them through Mainz' Old Town, through the Schott plant and several suburbs.
LG&E and KU, which are part of E.ON AG headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany, located about 135 miles north of Mainz on the Rhine River, covered Weber and Dunbar's transportation costs. The Mayor's Office in Mainz and the Mainz Friendship Circle Committee covered lodging, meals and entry fees. The City of Mainz had a full program of activities planned for the participants including a welcome reception at the mayor's office, guided tour of Mainz, an international pasta party and a Rhine River cruise.
Approximately 13,000 runners, bikers and inline skaters participated in an event designed to promote international goodwill and multicultural understanding among athletes. Sister Cities was especially pleased to have a participant representing Louisville in the inaugural year of the 2/3 inline skating marathon option.
Mainz, located on the Rhine River, has been a major trading center since Roman days. It is the capitol of Rhineland-Palatinate and a major university city as well as the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg who invented the printing press. It has been a Louisville Sister City since 1994 and friendship city since 1977. Representatives from Louisville have competed in the Gutenberg Marathon several times since it began in 2000.
In announcing Weber's and Dunbar's participation, Sharon Receveur, president of Sister Cities of Louisville said, "We're so pleased that our Sister City Mainz has once again extended the invitation to our local runners. We know that Terri and Tom will represent us well and wish them a successful race."
"It was a great to have the opportunity to participate in one of Europe's premier races," Weber said. "This event was such an amazing experience. Mainz is a fabulous city and I enjoyed making new friends in our Sister City and the international running community. I want to extend a big thank you to all those involved in making this race not only happen, but making it so special."
"I think it was the first time in my life that I was gone on Derby Day," Dunbar added. "But, if you had to be gone on Derby, Mainz was great place to be."
