Police, Fire Departments 'Play' Tribute at LG&E-sponsored Patriot Game 2004
(Louisville, Ky. - September 14, 2004) - Flags were waving, fans were cheering, and the end result was another close win for the Louisville Metro Police Department at Patriot Game II, held Sept. 9 at Bellarmine University. With an 82-80 victory over Louisville Fire & Rescue, the Police claimed the trophy for the second consecutive year. LG&E returned as presenting sponsor for the event that drew more than 2,500 people.
Patriot Game II was dubbed "The Rematch." While the game was a success for all involved, it was secondary to the meaning behind it - to mark the third anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy by paying tribute to those who lost their lives, as well as honor the men and women of Louisville Metro Police, and Louisville Fire and Rescue. In addition, the game raised more than $25,000 for The Healing Place, Kentucky's largest shelter recovery program for men, women and their children.
"We believe The Patriot Game is one of the most important initiatives in this community in many years," said Jay Davidson, President and CEO of The Healing Place. "It expresses our appreciation for the support the Metro Police and Fire & Rescue provide for the life-saving work we do."
"Our employees work very closely with the police and fire departments during emergency situations and restoration efforts," said Chip Keeling, LG&E Energy's Vice President of Communications. "Although the Police won, the true winner was The Healing Place. When you think about how much the community benefits from this game, it was a no-brainer for LG&E to return as presenting sponsor."
The Healing Place is Kentucky's largest shelter recovery program for men and women and their children. It provides a detox center and medical clinic for its clients. The Healing Place is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2004 and is an award-winning, nationally recognized program, having been named "A Model That Works" by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Its mission is to reach the homeless, offer recovery for the addicted, and help restore productive lives.
