LG&E and KU to Roll Out McGruff Truck Program for Kids
(LOUISVILLE, Ky. - January 15, 2004) Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities employees will soon have a well-known sidekick riding along with them - McGruff, The Crime Dog. McGruff represents an important community service that LG&E and KU, subsidiaries of LG&E Energy, plan to launch in March. McGruff Truck decals will designate more than 800 of the utilities' vehicles as a place for children throughout Kentucky to turn for help. As McGruff Truck drivers, LG&E and KU employees will assist children in distress or emergency situations by calling the local authorities. Employees will not attempt to manage an emergency themselves, but will be a visible, quick source of help for kids in need.
"Our employees are trained professionals, highly visible, trusted among our customers, and frequently are asked to lend assistance anyway," said Chris Hermann, Senior Vice President, Energy Delivery. "We are very excited to be able to provide an added measure of security and comfort in the communities we serve through our constant presence."
To qualify for the McGruff Truck Program, LG&E Energy met strict requirements and was approved by The National McGruff House Network, which is licensed by the National Crime Prevention Council. The McGruff Truck Program is a perfect fit for LG&E and KU employees, who work throughout Kentucky, have quick access to authorities, undergo routine safety training and are used to handling emergencies. Additionally, all McGruff Truck drivers will be trained annually to meet the National McGruff assistance standards.
LG&E Energy is launching the McGruff Truck Program over the next several months with the support of the Kentucky State Police, the Louisville Metro Police, the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Division of Police, and other authorities around the state. They will help with the education process and welcome the opportunity to reach more children in need.
"The McGruff Truck Program is a valuable public service," said Sgt. Phil Crumpton, Kentucky State Police. "It combines the resources and people of LG&E and KU, with the widespread recognition of McGruff and the support of law enforcement officials across the state. We are very excited about the chance to partner on this program."
Since 1980, McGruff has been educating Americans about crime prevention through public service advertising, educational films and videos, brochures, posters, booklets, and personal appearances. Market and survey research reveals that 99 percent of children ages six to 12 recognize McGruff.
