Local Students to Assemble Weatherization Kits for Low-Income Households

(LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Oct. 14, 2003) Central High School students and Ahrens Work Transition students recently gathered at Louisville Gas and Electric Co.'s (LG&E) Broadway Office Complex (BOC) to assemble 2,500 weatherization kits for low-income households.

LG&E funded the weatherization initiative, and (Louisville Metro Community Action Partnership (LMCAP) will distribute the kits on a first-come, first-served basis to low-income households starting in November. Kits include plastic sheeting, water heater wrap, wall plates, rope caulk, tacks, and a brochure that includes conservation tips to help save energy and money. LG&E estimates that simple measures like these can save customers up to 25 percent on their heating bills.

"Weatherization is the most effective way of combating rising natural gas costs," said Chip Keeling, LG&E Energy's Vice President of Communications. "These kits are one of the ways we're reaching out to our low-income customers. We're very grateful to the students of Central High School and Ahrens for their help."

Walter Lay of Project Warm added, "Thanks to the efforts of LG&E and the students of Central High School and Ahrens, low-income customers will be able to have some control over their utility bills."

LG&E also works with LMCAP to make sure that federal Low-Income Heating Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) dollars are distributed quickly. The company also raises hundreds of thousands of dollars in aide through its Community WinterHelp program and frequently makes alternative payment arrangements for those who are having difficulty paying their bills.
