(LEXINGTON, Ky. - Feb. 19, 2003) Kentucky Utilities (KU) wants to reiterate the following important safety tips in the wake of the winter storm that has left thousands of customers without power.

• If you use a generator, always follow the manufacturer's directions and notify utility repair crews when they are in the area to protect employees from the potential danger of electrical backfeed. Use the generator in a well-ventilated area to avoid a buildup of dangerous fumes.
• Stay away from downed lines. Always assume downed wires are energized power lines. There is no way to tell if a downed wire is an energized power line or a cable or telephone wire. Stay away and keep others away, as well. KU urges customers to report downed power lines immediately by calling 1-800-981-0600.
• Do not stand under icy limbs or power lines. Be on the lookout for falling ice.
• Make sure any indoor heaters, like wood stoves or kerosene heaters, have adequate ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure the flue of your fireplace is working properly.
• Unplug major appliances, such as refrigerators, microwaves, VCRs, televisions and computers to avoid potential surges when the power is restored.
• Do not use your kitchen stove to heat your home.
• Check food in your refrigerator and freezer carefully after an outage. Remember, when in doubt, throw it out.

Thousands of customers already have had their power restored. Crews are restoring power as quickly and as safely as possible.
