Now there are two ways to save money and help the environment. Help us reduce energy demand by signing up for this program enabling us to use our power plants more efficiently and delay the addition of new ones. Just sign up for our Demand Conservation program and choose between the switch and the programmable thermostat.
Option 1 - Get Paid with a Switch
With the switch option, a device is connected to your home's central air conditioning unit. We'll credit your utility bill $5 per month (up to $20 annually) for each of the summer months (June, July, August and September) per central air conditioning unit.
Enter your zip code to see if the Demand Conservation switch is available in your area: Option 2 - Save Money with a Programmable Thermostat
With the programmable thermostat, you will not receive the utility bill credit offered with the switch option; however, if used properly, the thermostat offers you the chance to reduce your year-round heating and cooling bill by 10% to 20% each year. (Existing Demand Conservation customers are not eligible for the thermostat option at this time.)How Demand Conservation Works
- With the switch option, a small device is connected to your central air conditioner. This device allows us to safely cycle central air conditioners off and on for brief periods during peak usage days during the summer — but only when absolutely necessary to conserve energy during heavy demand.
- With the programmable thermostat option, we will replace your existing thermostat with a top of the line 5-1-1 day thermostat that can be programmed with up to four temperature settings each day. This thermostat allows us to safely cycle central air conditioners off and on for brief periods during peak usage days during the summer — but only when absolutely necessary to conserve energy during heavy demand, exactly like the switch option.
- When cycling is necessary, air conditioners will cycle off for a few minutes each half hour on summer weekdays between late afternoon and early evening.
- Typically, cycling occurs no more than 20 days a year - but never on weekends or holidays.
- The best part is most people are not even aware when their air conditioner is being cycled.
- Electric water heaters may qualify for additional credit.
Share the Load!
In the energy business, "load" is the amount of energy a system is using at any given time. During
the year, the amount of energy needed - or the "energy demand" - fluctuates depending on
weather conditions or business hours of commercial or industrial companies. When demand for
electricity is highest, that's called a "peak" period. Every customer shares the load on the system
to some degree every single day, and Demand Conservation allows customers to share the load at
times during heavy demand or peak usage.Help the Environment!
With Demand Conservation, you help maintain a ready supply of energy for our expanding
community. In the long run, you benefit because of the reduced environmental effects and costs of
building and operating new power plants for peak demand use. By demanding conservation, you
can:
- make a significant contribution to energy efficiency,
- increase the energy reliability in your neighborhood, and
- help keep energy costs low.
